If you’ve been holding bitcoin for a few years, you know that your self-custody can always be improved. Having multiple keys to secure your bitcoin may give you extra security from a simple wallet, but it still can feel intimidating. You also need to think about inheritance and explain to your loved ones how to recover your holdings without you involved. Having timelocks on some of your keys may help with that, but you don’t want to be dependent on a third party for recovery. It’s 2025 and simple bitcoin inheritance is finally possible for most people!

This is optimal for good inheritance planning, as your bitcoin can always be accessible to your loved ones after a certain time without relying on third parties such as collaborative custody providers.
At Cryptosteel, we want more bitcoiners to self-custody with effortless backups for everyone, and inheritance should be top of mind for bitcoiners who want to protect their wealth for generations. With the Liana bitcoin wallet and Cryptosteel metal backups, you finally have everything coming together in a single package to protect your bitcoin the right way, and ensure your loved ones will be capable of retrieving it even if you are not there.
So what’s in the box and how does it work? Let’s look into it.
Pick Your Package
First, you have to order your pack, which will include hardware devices, Cryptosteel backups and instructions to create and secure your bitcoin wallet for inheritance, as well as for theft and loss protection. The starter pack contains two (2) Ledger Nano Plus signing devices with other choices available such as Bitbox02, Ledger Flex or Blockstream Jade, and two (2) Cryptosteel Capsule backups. Included in the pack is an instruction manual, along with an inheritance letter, two (2) USB flash drives, and three (3) tamper evident bags.
As an advanced user, if you have a particular set up in mind for your wallet, you can always order additional devices and backups that will be included on top of what’s already included in the starter pack. Free shipping is available globally for all customers.
Install Liana Wallet
Once you have received your inheritance package, you can use it to set up your bitcoin wallet using Liana. Make sure you are comfortable in a safe space as this will take a bit of time. As a bitcoin wallet, Liana uses optional time-based delays, called timelocks, to activate recovery keys only after some time, up to about 15 months. Liana supports both single and multi-signature wallets to match your needs and only uses bitcoin native technology so no third parties are required.
Simply follow the instructions provided within the pack to download, verify and install Liana on your desktop and create your new bitcoin wallet. We recommend following all the steps mentioned, including the verification of the software authenticity and integrity, to follow best practices in terms of security before you get started.
Create Wallet
Now that you’ve properly installed your Liana bitcoin wallet on your desktop, you can set up your hardware devices and back them up using Cryptosteel Capsule. The Liana wallet will guide you through the process, from choosing how to set up your wallet, to naming devices, backing up keys and the wallet itself.
One of the most notable steps is to choose how to secure your bitcoin, using the options provided by the Liana wallet. On the screen, you have a choice between three options.
- You can pick “Simple Inheritance”, which is a wallet with one regular key and another key that is available for recovery after some time in case the first key isn’t.
- There is a second option named the “Expanding Multisig” wallet, which has two keys, both required to sign transactions (a 2-of-2 multisig wallet), and a third recovery key that is available only after some time in case one of the two initial keys isn’t.
- Finally, there is a third option for full wallet customization that is available but recommended only to advanced users.
Backup Your Keys
It is always recommended to properly back up the seed phrase from your hardware device.
Whatever option you pick for your wallet, you should back up your keys as hardware devices fail over time. But due to the flexibility of Liana wallet, you may want to only have a key available in a backup for recovery and not in a hardware device for transaction signing. You could also do the opposite, and only have the key available on a hardware device for transaction signing but not in a backup for recovery. That can be safe if you have another key with a backup available for recovery. The choice is up to you but if you are confused by these options or unsure how to best do it, you should most likely back up all your keys for a safe and smooth recovery. We have recommendations included in the Liana Box Starter Pack to make the entire wallet backup easy.
By default, each hardware device allows its key to be exported as a seed phrase available for your recovery backup. This list of 12 or 24 words should be backed up on paper first, verified, and then backed up on metal using the Cryptosteel Capsules included in your pack. It is very important that you verify that the metal backup works by testing a key recovery in your wallet. This is to make sure a given key was correctly backed up with no errors.
Attention: always test your seed phrase backup before using your wallet. You may not be able to recover your bitcoin if your backup has errors, and you may lose your bitcoin.
Inheritance Instructions
A final and essential step when using the Liana Box Starter Pack is documenting how your loved ones can recover your bitcoin holdings if you pass away. Your pack includes instruction guides to help make this process as straightforward as possible during difficult times. Ensuring your loved ones can independently recover your bitcoin after your death is crucial.
You will also be asked to back up your wallet details, also called a descriptor, which is different from backing up your keys, which is usually referred to as the seed phrase. Both descriptor and seed phrase backups are needed to ensure your loved ones can recover your bitcoin. The main difference from the seed phrase backup for your keys is that the descriptor has all the public information about a wallet, which is required by hardware devices to sign transactions.
